The Marshalltown Community School District invites the public to a ribbon cutting and open house for the new Fitness CourtⓇ Studio and Tornado Safe Team Room addition to Marshalltown High School (MHS) on Thursday, August 29.
The new Fitness Court Studio, located adjacent to the tennis courts on South 2nd Avenue, was made possible through grant funding from the National Fitness Campaign, as well as in-kind donations from Larson Construction and Clappsaddle-Garber & Associates. Additionally, Physical Education & Recreation Levy (PERL) funding was used for this publicly accessible activity space.
This new Fitness Court Studio at MHS features two workout areas separated by a mural wall designed by artists to showcase the setting and to inspire people as they enjoy the benefits and energy created by a great outdoor workout. Created with people aged 14 and over and with all abilities in mind, the workouts are adaptable for all fitness levels, allowing participants to move at their own pace. Users also may download the free Fitness Court App which acts as a coach-in-your-pocket and enhances the outdoor gym into a digitally supported wellness experience.
This new addition is open to the public for everyone to use to improve their health and wellness. The ribbon-cutting ceremony for this new feature will be at 5 p.m
The tornado safe and team room addition at the MHS Stadium Complex was made possible through a $3.4 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The project will have a total cost of just over $3.9 million. MCSD covered the remaining cost using Statewide School Infrastructure Sales and Service Tax (SAVE) funds, which can be used for construction projects. This funding source cannot be used for salaries or program needs.
Along with being a structure to withstand high winds and tornadoes, the building will also be used as a meeting space, first aid station, training room, and for concessions. MCSD is committed to providing safe and secure facilities for the Bobcat community, a core reason why the district pursued this grant and project.
The ribbon cutting for the tornado safe room addition will take place at 5:30 p.m.
"These new facilities will benefit all MHS students in multiple ways," said Superintendent Dr. Theron Schutte. "The Fitness Court Studio will enhance our physical education classes, providing a new space for students to improve their health and wellness. The tornado safe room will ensure our students' and community's safety during severe weather events. Together, these improvements will significantly enhance the educational environment and opportunities at Marshalltown High School."
These ribbon cutting and open house events are free and open to the public. Community members with questions about the ribbon cutting event or any of the projects should contact Schutte at tschutte@marshalltown.k12.ia.us.
