There is a lot to know when approaching a school bus on the road, including understanding when it is safe to pass and when you must stop and wait. While no one wants to receive a citation for illegally passing a stopped school bus, violations will result in a citation issued by the police department. School Bus Safety Guidelines:
Two/Three Lane Roads:
Following a Bus:
Red or Amber Lights: No passing allowed. Be prepared to stop.
Stop at least 15 feet behind the bus.
Once lights are off and the stop arm is retracted, proceed with caution.
Meeting a Bus (Opposite Direction):
Amber Lights: Slow down to 20 mph or less and be ready to stop.
Red Lights and Stop Arm: Stop in front of the bus. Proceed only after the lights are off and the stop arm is retracted.
Important Reminder: On two-lane roads, center turn lanes, or three-lane roads, vehicles traveling in both directions must stop when red lights are flashing and the stop arm is out. Failure to stop may result in a citation.
Four Lane Roads:
Following a Bus: Red or amber lights indicate no passing; be prepared to stop.
Meeting a Bus (Opposite Direction): Vehicles may pass with caution when red or amber lights are flashing.

Illegally passing a stopped school bus can result in a suspended license for up to 180 days, a minimum fine of $250 plus court costs, and drivers should also exercise extra caution around school loading and unloading zones to ensure the safety of students.
